Walkabot Code

By Herra BRE, on 2010-05-19, 13:39.

Welcome to the Walkabot Code home-page!

Walkabot is an experiment in developing (yet another) platform for web-sites and web-apps. The goal is to build something that doesn't suck, and have a bit of fun while doing so.

Check out the Documentation, or go straight for the source.

This site is of course running on Walkabot, what else?

Welcome!

Seems you took the time to create an account. At the moment it won't do much for you, but maybe later... :-)

Project Status

By Herra BRE, on 2010-05-19, 16:04.

The current state of the Walkabot code is... alpha!

What rocks:

What sucks:

  • Documentation is incomplete.
  • Security: need to check for 'create' perms when adding kids.
  • My JavaScript is pre-obfuscated.
  • Chat is broken
  • Comments are broken
  • Photo albums are broken
  • The site creator is at about 90% for minimal and about 50% for personal sites. 0% for the community pages.
  • I am already bored of the default theme
  • As always, things could be faster

Where is this all going:

  • The GEO support that inspired the name in the first place
  • .. and an Android client.
  • Chat everywhere (IRC and XMPP)
  • Implement social protocols: RSS, Pubsubhubbub, FOAF, OpenID, Salmon, ...
  • Become an OpenID provider
  • Read/write content from/to Twitter, Facebook, Buzz, Youtube, anything with an RSS feed.
  • ?
  • Profit!

Into the weeds...

By Herra BRE, on 2010-05-29, 10:31.

I got side-tracked a bit, and went and created the Beanstalks Project.

I think this may actually be the missing link for me to find a purpose for all this hackery - putting modern, intelligent HTTP servers on end user machines is as far as I can tell a relatively new thing.

I'm sure I'll find a use for it.

Many small fixes

By Herra BRE, on 2010-05-22, 20:48.
Today was a day of many small bug-fixes and changes:
  • The inventory now appears, but has bugs
  • Made progress fixing the web-chat
  • Added view includes to the template language
  • Made the "anonymous ninja" avatars prettier
  • Cleaned up the user-profile page a bit
  • Fixed and tweaked OpenID, logins and sign-up
  • Fixed default ACLs and parenthood on new users
  • Started refactoring Entity.pm because it is horrid.
  • Added icons from famfamfam.com to make page ACL settings visible. Must remember to create a credits page/document and credit and thank Mark James.

Privacy and OpenID fixes

By Herra BRE, on 2010-05-21, 16:35.

Today's new feature is the protection against referral-leaks on non-public pages. More details in Privacy.

I also squashed some OpenID/signup bugs and discovered that Facebook Connect is too bloated for my tastes.

So... I've taken Facebook Connect support off the TODO list for now. Requiring that every single site get an API key from them does not meet my standards of Installation simplicity.

Maybe I'll change my mind later, or maybe someone else will send me a patch. :-)

OpenID support

By Herra BRE, on 2010-05-20, 20:56.

Today I rewrote the login / signup code to not be horribly broken.

I also added basic OpenID support, which seems to work at least some of the time. There are still some rough edges, and I would like to get Facebook Connect working too, but I am quite happy with today's progress!

Launching code.walkabot.net

By Herra BRE, on 2010-05-19, 16:13.

After working on this thing for quite a while, I've decided to put it out there - code.walkabot.net is up and running.

It's very alpha (read: not good at anything) at the moment, but Installation is easy and I may as well release this stuff and see what happens.

Since commenting is currently borked, please leave comments on my old blog, or use my my old-school feedback form to tell me what you think.

Just don't tell me I'm reinventing the wheel, I already know that. :-)

You appear to be a robot!
